<p>Hi friends&#8230; I’m Sally Cairnduff a pharmacist and General Manager of Miners Dispensary &#8211; a non profit community health organisation.</p>
<p>My mission in life is to empower women to use online services. I genuinely believe that utilisation of these services can improve health outcomes for you and our community, and it just might save your life in an emergency.</p>
<p>With increased understanding of online services comes real health advantages that can guide health professionals when making clinical decisions.</p>
<p>So here are 3 tips from me that can really make a difference:</p>
<p><strong>1. Improved access to Health Information</strong></p>
<p>As a health professional I prefer not to advocate for Dr Google! There are many websites that provide misinformation. However, I cannot deny that there are several online tools that can improve our health and well-being.</p>
<p>Firstly, you can find valuable health information on government and not-for-profit organisations websites. Look out for websites that end in ‘. gov.au’ or ‘. org.au.’  Some general health information websites I would recommend include:</p>
<p><strong>Better health channel</strong> &#8211; help people understand and manage their health and medical conditions and help them make lifestyle choices based on their needs. <a href="https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/">https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/</a></p>
<p><strong>NPS Medicine Wise</strong> – aims to improve the health of Australians. It supports consumers with the provision of information and education about prescription medicines. <a href="https://www.nps.org.au">https://www.nps.org.au</a></p>
<p>There are <strong>other websites</strong> which are specific for certain medical conditions such as the heart foundation, diabetes Australia and many others.</p>
<p><strong><u>Secondly, you can obtain valuable health information if you have an active email address. </u></strong></p>
<p>You may want to provide an email address to your pharmacist or other health professionals. For example, if you join as a member at Miners Dispensary, we will email health information targeted to you personally. Most health services would provide a similar service. These emails are a wonderful way of increasing awareness of medical conditions or alerting people to symptoms that require medical treatment. It is important to have access to email to take advantage of these services.</p>
<p><strong>Additionally, many medications have online support for patients. In most cases, accessing this service would again require the patient to have an email.</strong> For example, most injectable medicines will give you access to a trained nurse to assist with injecting for the first time.</p>

<p><strong>2. Improved Access to Medicine</strong></p>
<p>Wonthaggi medical group located in Wonthaggi, Inverloch and Grantville and South Gippsland Family Medicine have <strong>online booking systems</strong>. This means you can make bookings 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, add bookings to your electronic calendar, get reminders and receive health updates.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Telehealth</strong> – doctors and specialists can now consult via telephone or online if a physical examination is not necessary. The experience is obviously enhanced if you are confident with online services.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Electronic prescriptions</strong>
<ul>
<li>Doctors are now providing electronic prescriptions which can be uploaded to the pharmacy without the patient presenting at the clinic or the pharmacy. These electronic prescriptions have been especially useful during the pandemic when patients were consulting with their doctors via telephone.</li>
<li>The doctor can generate the prescription, send the QR code to the patient (if you need a script when travelling) or directly to the pharmacy. The patient can then contact the pharmacy and request dispensing. The medication can then be delivered, usually for a fee or picked up by the patient.</li>
<li>If an electronic script is ‘lost’ we can use MySL to track or ‘find’ the prescription. If it has not been dispensed at another pharmacy, we can generate the script from MySL.</li>

<p><strong>3. Improved Health Databases</strong></p>
<p><strong>Personal health apps</strong> – there are a number of free applications to assist with health monitoring. Most health indicators can be recorded and analysed in a software application. We can monitor weight, exercise, blood sugars and meal diary, blood pressure, keep a mental health diary and there are many other examples. The list is endless. These tools can provide a health professional with valuable information assisting with diagnosis, treatment plans and evaluation of their success.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>We commonly use the <strong>MedAdvisor app</strong> at Miners Dispensary. As a first step a patient leaves their original prescriptions in the pharmacy or the doctor emails electronic prescriptions to the patient or the pharmacy. The patient then downloads the app using a digital device from app store or google play. The app creates a list of your prescriptions, gives reminders when scripts are due, enables you to order the prescription at the pharmacy, notifies you when the script is ready. The prescription list is particularly helpful during a doctor’s consultation as it lets you know what prescriptions you need.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li><strong>Large scale health databases can also improve health outcomes. The My Health Record is an example of this. I would like to reiterate that everyone should have an active My Health Record. </strong>The record was introduced in 2018 by the Australian Government and everyone with a Medicare card or DVA card was automatically activated. At the time of its release, a number of persons were concerned with the possibility of a breach of privacy. To date, there have been no significant breaches, highlighting the security of our information. Individuals could inactivate the service if they put in a request to the agency. <strong>This record is extremely useful for health professionals</strong>. It contains health information including dispensed medications, pathology test results, immunisation records, medical imaging results and more. <strong>This is extremely helpful for health professionals when making clinical decisions especially in an emergency situation</strong>. <p><strong>It is really important for your mental and physical health to have solid online skills</strong>. You will have improved access to health information via reputable websites and by providing your email address to trusted health care professionals. You will have improved access to medicine via online bookings, telehealth, and electronic prescriptions. Health professionals will have access to improved medical databases via personal apps such as MedAdvisor or via large scale databases such as <strong>my health record</strong> which can assist in an emergency situation.</p>

<p>Hi everyone,</p>
<p><a href="https://ruralwomenonline.org.au/"><em>Rural Women Online</em></a> was just shared on my company’s intranet.</p>
<p>I am a woman from a regional area who’s worked in IT for more years than I can count. I have also been the only women in various teams for well over a decade, and I continually get confused as to why IT is seen primarily as ‘men’s work’.</p>
<p>No-one is denying that IT is a male dominated industry, but my question is why? If women realised what IT workers get paid compared to the difficulty of the work, and compared to the undervalued, and extremely hard work of ‘women centric’ industries, like child-care or aged care there would be a revolution. While the tiresome, and amazing fight of women everywhere to ensure those industries get paid their due is a good one, it is a long one. Meanwhile, right here, right now, women who choose a career in IT get a good wage, good maternity and leave benefits, and flexible working arrangements. I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of another industry that currently does that for women.</p>
<p>It is a flexible career path, there is an abundance of opportunities for growth and learning, and in my personal experience a career in IT can be whatever you want it to be.</p>
<p>I really believe in what you’re doing, IT is such a big part of everyday life now, it is needed to pay bills, speak to a doctor, go to a restaurant and shop while you are sick. And to me <em>Rural Women Online </em>is about empowering women to be proactive to learn essential skills.</p>
<p>I have had 20+ years in IT, and I’m looking forward to becoming a mentor. <em>Rural Women Online</em> mentoring opportunity enables you to access an IT savvy women (like me) for up to 30 hours one-on-one.</p>
<p>Although I have a lack of management experience, I think it is important that the message gets out that IT doesn’t have to be about ‘management’ and there is always scope for sideways or diagonal movement.</p>
<p>I really believe that there could be more women in IT, and programs like <em>Rural Women Online</em> can enable women to increase their IT literacy and ensure that we are all a part of, and help create, the digital future together.</p>

Why I became a mentor and an advocate for women to work in IT

<p class="p1">Elizabeth Walpole lives on a farm at Whorouly, Victoria. Elizabeth has been heavily involved with Australia’s Women in Agriculture Network for many years.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">When thinking about my involvement with computers, I recall that I was doing the farm books, which is something I inherited when I married. My husband didn&#8217;t want to do the books, so it was over to me. Somebody told us about a wonderful program that was on a computer called Agri master. So, we purchased a computer and the software.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">I was interested in computers from the beginning and my husband, despite undertaking several computer courses, was never to be seen sitting in front of it!<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>I really enjoyed working using the computer despite poor data connection in the early years.<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>We installed a satellite dish on the roof, which really didn&#8217;t work very well and if you wanted to download something, well, you could be waiting for more than a few hours. Recently a digital tower was placed close to the farm. This changed everything and since then, I can get on my computer and download something almost immediately.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">However, during COVID, I felt very isolated living here. My computer provided invaluable connection. I was introduced to Zoom &#8211; I&#8217;d never heard of Zoom, and I’d never heard of Webcams. It opened-up wonderful things to me because I could still be involved in meetings. I was secretary of a group that is involved with East Timor and even though we were not able to meet weekly, we’d meet every month on Zoom, and that was just wonderful to speak to a group of people in real time.</p>
<p class="p1">Also, I discovered that there are all sorts of things that you can do on Zoom. I did a medical course through the University of Tasmania. You might think why would I want to do that? My previous job was nursing, and I&#8217;ve always been interested in medical things. Over this time when we had COVID, I also joined a group to learn more about my family’s history. Genealogy was something I&#8217;d previously never been deeply involved with. I&#8217;ve also enjoyed being able to listen to lots of talks &#8211; podcasts from the Wheeler Centre, the State Library, The Australian Institute and of course from the Victorian Women’s Trust.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">It was just wonderful during COVID to be able to contact family via Zoom that we otherwise couldn’t see. Now that we&#8217;re able to get out and about, there&#8217;s nothing better than being face to face with friends but having a reliable internet connection is a must for all country women! I have one particular friend who has only recently been introduced to the computer and I was able to help her too. I don&#8217;t know that she&#8217;s actually Zoomed, but she has certainly become more involved. She&#8217;s learned how to pay her accounts, and things like that, which has been helpful for her during the pandemic. I&#8217;m always encouraging my friends to spread their wings a bit. I do acknowledge that not everybody is as lucky as me to be able to have good data connection. Lots of people in the country still have significant problems with their internet connection.</p>
<p class="p1">Having reasonable computer skills has made such a difference to me during COVID and I’m continuing with it as I feel it’s so good for my mind not to get shut down in your own little world and it’s important to hear what other people are thinking.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">Years ago, I recall country women attending computer classes in Wangaratta. Ten farming women got together and taught themselves how to use their computers. Now, that&#8217;s something that could happen now.<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>I am so delighted that my journey has been a bit of an impetus for the Rural Women Online initiative. I have no doubt that this will provide a great boost for rural women in Victoria.</p>

<h3>In the last two years, various research and evidence has emerged that speaks to the critical barriers experienced by women in rural and remote areas to online participation.</h3>

<p>The most significant of these is the Australian Digital Inclusive Index 2020 &amp; 2021 (ADII), which identified three crucial pinch points: access, affordability, and ability.</p>

<p>VWT will continue to advocate for greater access and affordability, but it is on that third point—ability— that we feel we can really make a difference.</p>

<p>Launching in mid 2022, <strong>Rural Women Online (RWO)</strong> is an initiative aimed at helping rural women connect online by fast tracking their access to IT training, support and mentoring.</p>

<p>The project was originally conceived in May/June 2021, and is co-funded by the Helen McPherson Smith Trust and the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation, with in-kind support from VWT.</p>

<p>The project will consist of a public- facing website that focuses on the three pillars of RWO:</p>

<p><strong>1. Training</strong></p>
<p>A self-directed, mini-curriculum of advice covering a wide range of tech knowledge—from e-safety to how to use various software, providing effective and clear communication by using videos and women’s stories.</p>

<p><strong>2. Support</strong></p>
<p>VWT will run a one-day-a-week ‘help desk’ in real time—fielding email and phone enquiries that provide instructive advice that empowers, not condescends, to users.</p>

<p><strong>3. Mentoring</strong></p>
<p>The most intensive pillar, RWO mentoring will provide up to 30 hours of one-to-one learning to a select group of users (capped at 300). Entry to this program will be filtered according to a number of considerations including user’s level of IT literacy, hardship, how remotely they are located, and if they live in bushfire-affected areas.</p>

<p>VWT is contracting the services of Your Creative, a multi-disciplinary studio based in Melbourne, to build the RWO website, which will act as the central hub for accessing online training and sign-up forms for mentors and mentees.</p>
<p>In addition to the website, VWT will coordinate a series of 12 in-person ‘Open Day’ sessions at various rural locations, including 4 bushfire- affected areas: Mildura, Swan Hill, Ballarat, Hamilton, Horsham, Shepparton, Wangaratta, Wonthaggi, Corryong, Myrtleford, Mallacoota and Buchan &#8211; Bairnsdale.</p>

<li>Engage women in the RWO program and activate their participation</li>
<li>Build a constructive atmosphere leaving users feelings valued and enlivened by their participation</li>

<li>Provide IT support on the day for questions on computer equipment and software</li>
<li>Provide access and assistance on training and support through the distribution and dissemination of IT educational materials</li>
<li>Assist in signing up mentees and mentors</li>
<li>Promote and engage in collaboratively devised communications strategy to attract participants</li>

<p>The Internet is a large network of computers from all over the world. It contains shared information and technology tools that anyone with an Internet connection can access. Internet Services Providers usually charge a monthly fee, for example, Telstra. Internet access and connection is required to do anything online. You need to be connected to the internet in order to send/receive an email, use Facebook, use Zoom, Shop online and more.</p>

<p>NBN is the government supplied internet connection designed for everyone in Australia. Individuals connect to NBN through an internet retailer such as Tesltra, Optus, Spintel, Vodaphone and more. In most cases, there is a fixed monthly fee for this type of internet and provides plenty of data for video streaming and computer games. Although NBN is widely available in Australia, we know that it is still not available everywhere. The first step is to check if your house is ready to connect to the NBN. This can be done at:</p>

<p>There are a limited number of new internet providers that are providing Satellite internet to customers in Australia. Satellite internet is a new offering and involves a costly up front fee for the equipment but is very good in remote locations and faster than the NBN in most situations.</p>

<p>Cellular data, also known as 4G or 5G, is generally used when you need internet on the run (ie: not at home or in a single location). It is flexible and portable but generally costs more to run than NBN and will not be suitable for streaming large amounts of videos or computer games.</p>

<p>Hotspot (also known as tethering) is a location where people can gain access to the internet by using shared WIFI. Providing a hotspot requires you to have Cellular data, also known as 4G or 5G.</p>

<p>There are also personal hotspots. You can use your iPhone or many Android smartphones as a WIFI Hotspot. By turning on your hotspot functions, your phone can use cellular data to create WIFI, providing internet access to any device (say your computer) to connect to your hotspot.</p>

<p class="p1">Electronic mail (Email) is a way to exchange messages between individuals or groups using electronic devices. These private messages are delivered to the recipient’s inbox.</p>
<p class="p1">It is necessary to have an Email address when logging into programs or other applications such as MyGov or Facebook. These platforms use your email address to send administrative messages such as identity verification or password updates.</p>
<h3 class="p2">Setting up an email address</h3>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1"><b>Option 1: Web-based email address – let’s get going&#8230;</b></span></p>
<p class="p1">A web-based email address is one that are browser based. These are usually free and easily accessible.</p>
<p class="p1">The most used free web-based Email services are Gmail and Outlook/Hotmail.</p>
<p class="p1">What you need to set up a web-based email account</p>

<li class="p4">Your email is unique like your phone number and therefore, it will not let you create an email if somebody already has the same one. You may have to add different numbers, letters, or dots to make yours different</li>
<li class="p4">The basic layout of an email is as follows:

<li>‘myemailname’ is the username you choose. Your name could be Zola Smith. It is usually a variation of your name or a company name for professional use. The @ sign indicated a break between the username and email provider. Everything after the @ sign is the email provider. For example, if you make an email address with Gmail your email will be zolasmith@gmail.com</li>
</ul>

<p class="p1">Most internet providers will supply you with a free email address that is linked to your internet account. For example, <b>yourname@bigpond.com</b> for Bigpond or <b>yourname@optusnet.com.au</b>. for Optus. These can be easy to use and the provider will supply instructions on how to set them up on your computer/phone.</p>
<p class="p11"><strong><i>NOTE:</i></strong> These email addresses is that they are owned by the internet provider so if you change internet providers you may loose the email address or have to pay the provider to keep using it.</p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1"><b>Option 3. Personal domain name – and using .com.au<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></b></span></p>
<p class="p1">An email address that uses a personal domain name means that the domain name can be specific to your business. For example, <b>yourname@yourcompanyname.com.au</b></p>
<p class="p1">or <span class="s1"><strong><span class="s2">zola@smithagriculture@com.au. </span></strong></span>This helps your business be easily identified and remembered by customers.</p>
<p class="p1">Say you want people to know you’re based in Australia, you would have to pay for an email ending in ‘.au’, something that web-based providers like Gmail or Outlook/Hotmail don’t provide.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">These kind of email addresses cost money and depending on the company you use, have a variety or storage and support options.</p>
<h3 class="p2">Sending an email</h3>
<ol>
<li class="p12">Look for a NEW MESSAGE button sometimes it will say COMPOSE and can be accompanied by a plus sign symbol or pen on paper symbol like the  examples below.<br />

<li class="p12">Press this button and it will come up with a new, blank message window. Where is says TO you will write in the email address of the recipients.</li>
<li class="p12">There may also be a CC section in the email &#8211; this is where you can add the email address of other people that you want to get a copy of the email rather than send multiple copies of the same email <i>NOTE:</i> when you use CC everyone that receives the email will also see the addresses of the other people that receive the email so you need to ensure you are not giving out other peoples private details.</li>
<li class="p12">There may also be a BCC section. This is like the CC section except the email addresses listed here are hidden so they receive a copy of the email but no one else knows their address.</li>
<li class="p12">Where is says SUBJECT, you will give a brief summary of what the email is about. Limit this to a single line summary.</li>
<li class="p12">In the blank space below TO and SUBJECT you can write your email in the body of the form and then press send to SEND!<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></li>

Type your reply and click SEND. <i>HOT TIP:</i> IF THIS IS FOR BUSINESS be sure that you’re not sending an email to several addresses where the email feed has no relevance to the question or the person you wish to send to. Some businesses always start a new email referring to your previous mail&#8230;as that way they ensure that the question asked is replied to. This is sometimes easier to review when looking to ensure that you have responded in ‘sent box’.</li>

<li class="p12">Click on the message you would like to forward and look for the FORWARD button. This button usually displays an arrow pointing the opposite way to the reply and reply all buttons. Once you click forward, it will display an exact copy of the original email. You must fill in the email address of the recipient(s) you would like to forward it to and click send.</li>

With covid, Zoom has become the most common tool used for video conferencing as it can be free and is considered the easiest for home and small business use. <p class="p1">When you click on another person’s Facebook profile, you will be able to see an overview of their profile and these buttons (most often of the right side of the screen).</p>
<p class="p1">By clicking ADD FRIEND you are sending a friend request to another user. The recipient can either accept or decline this request. If they decline it, the request will disappear. If they accept if, you will be able to view their full profile and can see when they make a post.</p>
<p class="p5">By clicking MESSAGE it will take you to Facebook Messenger where you can send private messages.</p>

Ok&#8230;.we love listening to audiobooks and podcasts in the car and listening to a variety of music. However, we note and are sad to say that music apps do not always pay musicians fairly for their work. Bandcamp pays artists better than Spotify so check out which providers pay better – and go with them if you can&#8230;or better still buy the odd record of an artist if you LOVE THEM AND PARTICULARLY IF THEY ARE LOCAL.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">So how do you find and access the songs and podcasts you want to listen to? Here’s some thoughts&#8230;</p>
<h2 class="p2">ABC Listen App</h2>
<p class="p1">You might like to start with the ABC Listen App. This is Australian owned and entirely free.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">While the ABC Listen App doesn’t have much music, it provides free access to a huge range of radio recordings, podcasts and audiobooks in all different genres.</p>
<p class="p1">The ABC Listen app does not require you to create an account. Once you download the app, you can immediately start browsing their many resources.</p>

(The great Neil Young and brilliant Joni Mitchell previously pulled their catalogues from Spotify for encouraging untruthful information on dealing with the pandemic and vaccination. <li class="p3">When possible, it is important to use services such as PayPal that enable you to send payments directly to businesses and individuals without disclosing your credit/debit card details. Paypal also makes it easier to keep track of payments, dispute payments and cancel automatic debits where a company has automatically made your single purchase an ongoing monthly/yearly charge.</li>
<li class="p3">If there is no option to use a payment method such as PayPal, ensure the website you are using is secure before entering your credit/debit card details.</li>

If possible, you can opt out of this OR keep record of the date you purchased your subscription to ensure you cancel it before the payment is withdrawn.</li>

<p>It is REALLY IMPORTANT to keep your financial details and your accounts safe while banking online. Banking online can be super convenient&#8230;.HOWEVER, do note the excellent tips to stay safe below as it will protect you and your precious income from thieving magpie types!</p>

<p><strong>For the most safety, make sure you:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Regularly change and update your passwords.</li>
<li>Use strong passwords, ones that would be difficult to guess and do not share it with anyone. The password should contain a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. It is also important to have different passwords on different sites so that if someone gains access to one, they won’t be able to access the others.</li>
<li>Where possible, set up and use two-factor/multi-factor authentication, so you consent to all new login attempts.</li>
<li>Regularly check your bank statement and transfers. Make sure all payments have been made by you. If you notice an unusual payment, contact your bank immediately.</li>
<li>Avoid logging into your bank account while using public computers or public Wi-Fi. Someone using these networks after you may be able to access your password via search history. Always assume that someone can access the computer’s history in public settings so we reckon that banking from home is a good idea.</li>
<li>Type in your bank URL rather than using<br />
an email link. The email and link might look legitimate but could direct you to a phishing site. OOhhhh so sneaky!</li>

This can be helpful when starting to save for the first time, or if you&#8217;re just looking for a bit of extra cash at the end of each month!</li>
